Occupy This!

If you are a living breathing person, you have undoubtedly heard about or have seen reports of people protesting what they feel is wrong with this country, on Wall Street. They are protesting the fact that many people have lost homes, lost jobs, lost money, and have no hope of relief on the horizon. The basis of the #OWS (Occupy Wall Street) protest is a feeling of being disenfranchised, of being taken advantage of by the big banks and the people who control the wealth of this country.

I am not a politically active person. I vote in the major elections, I try to stay abreast of the current situations as best I can. But, I really found this protest to be one that took me by surprise. Not so much as the reasons the people are protesting, but the way in which the protest is taking place. If you watch the news, you will see this group of people are meeting in a single place, with a shared goal in mind. They are looking for a change in the status quo. These people are looking for something quite different than what they had received in the past. I had witnessed these types of protest taking place in the middle-east recently. But, I never thought i would see this type of protest happen in the middle of NYC.

The book of Acts recounts the story of the followers of Christ who had just witnessed his arrest, his death by crucifixion, his raising from the dead, and his subsequent ascension up into heaven. After his resurrection and prior to his ascension, Jesus told his followers that he would be leaving. He went on to explain that though he would be leaving them physically, he would be sending them a spiritual comforter. But, before this comforter would come, they need to go gather in Jerusalem and wait. They didn’t know exactly what they were waiting for or what would happen to them. But, they waited anyway.

Continue reading in Acts 2 and you will find out exactly what this comforter was, how it manifested itself, and what theses followers of Christ were doing when it finally arrived. You might be asking what the Middle-eastern protesters or the #OWS protesters have to do with the followers of Christ some 2000 years ago. But, I promise there is something we can learn from their situation. What happens when a group of people with a shared cause and a shared desire for change gather together? In the case of the middle-east protests, you saw the government toppled and political change begin to take place. What will be the ultimate change brought on by the #OWS protesters is as of yet unknown. But, I can certainly tell you the change that was brought on by the events in the book of Acts. They went on to change the world. They took the message of Jesus Christ to every corner of the known world.

What would you like to see changed in your world? What events are taking place right now in your family or circle of friends that you wish you had the ability to change? I am convinced that If we would get the mindset of these protesters to say to ______ (insert your obstacle) ‘I am not going to stop praying until something changes’, we would begin to see a definite change in our circumstance. If the body of Christ, the entire community of believers could ever set aside their petty differences long enough to agree that this world needs God, we would see a shift in our world that would be unprecedented. But, even if the entire body of Christ doesn’t come together, you can still affect a change by simply believing and asking God to work in your circle of friends, your family, or your community. When are we going to stop letting the enemy beat us down and tell us our needs don’t matter to God. The Bible says that we can ask ANYTHING in His name. But, not only can we ask him, but that He is ABLE to do a work in our situation that is ABOVE and BEYOND anything we can ask Him to do.

Tell the enemy of your life that you are going to occupy yourself in prayer until the answer comes.
