Where’s the Instruction Manual?

lostmywayHave you ever had the feeling that what you were doing was different from what you knew you were supposed to be doing? It could be anything, from the school you were attending, to the job you went to everyday, or it may even be city you were living in. If you have ever felt the direction of your life was going in a different direction than what you believed God had intended for you, you are not alone.

There are many stories in the Bible about this very thing. All you need to do is search the internet and you will find countless stories of people who found themselves on the wrong path in life. Why is this? Why does this problem seem to be as old as time itself? Could it be that this issue is at the heart of what is wrong with society today? Have we traveled so far down the road called ‘My Way’ that we can’t seem to find our way back to ‘His Way’, so we have given up trying?

I could try to expound on every Bible story involving men and women who found themselves in a place far different from where God had intended for them to be, and there are many. I could reference the endless number of internet articles about people who tried to do things they thought were right, only to find out how wrong they were. I could tell you personal stories from my life that reference this very same thing. But, many of you have heard them over and over to the point they no longer have an impact on who you are or what you do. So, instead of giving you another Bible or Life lesson, I will just share a simple thought about what I feel is happening to us all, in one way or another. When I say us, I am really referencing Men in General. So, here goes.

God has a plan for each and every one of us. It is much like the instruction manuals we get with every piece of electronics we buy or every single power tool our wonderful spouse buys us as a present. But, we are MEN, we don’t need no stinking instruction manual. Who inept do the manufacturers think we are? Come on, who’s with me? You know I’m talking to you. You have done it too. You rip open the box of that new 60″ inch, 1080Dpi, Surround Sound, HDMI, Internet ready Big Screen and the first thing you do is toss the instructions back in the box. Why? Because you’re a man and you know exactly how it’s supposed to be hooked up. You spend the next 2-3 hours plugging this cord into that input, that wire into the output thingy, and then grabbing the remote control, only to find out you have success…..errrr, I mean you have a blue screen and no sound. You with me so far?

We proceed to push buttons, unhook wires, plug in different wires to different jacks and turn it back on to find the screen is still blue and now you have sound, but, it’s nothing but static. This typically goes on for about another hour or two, and it may even include a call to the local Big Box Super Store where you bought the TV, only to find out the 17 year old kid knows even less about the unit than you do. Some of us, I mean you, have even continued the second day on the futile quest to achieve technological success. But, nothing you do helps. You can’t get the picture to come on with the sound, or you can’t get the sound to play when yo have a picture. All the while, the instruction manual is buried under the mound of discarded wrappers and Styrofoam, in the box where you tossed it the day before.

As men, this is a hard-wired trait of our DNA that we have been dealing with from the moment we were born. Our fathers, grand fathers, great grand fathers have all had to deal with the very same ‘defect’, I mean blessing for as far back as you dare imagine. It’s a guy thing and any wife will tell you that it is one of the most endearing and frustrating traits all at the same time. Men are supposed to be able to think on their feet, figure things out, and be able to make things work. But, at the same time, we snap at them, yell at them, tell them to leave us alone and then sulk when we can’t get the thing to do what it’s supposed to do.

This ‘Healthy’ trait we are so blessed with is also one of the reasons we have such a hard time trusting God to lead us and to be the central focus in our decision making process. As men, we should know what to do. We are supposed to have all the answers for our family and for ourselves. All the while, the instruction manual that God has provided for us is laying under the pile of messed up decisions, discarded attempts, and broken dreams. We try to plug this decision into that situation, that choice into this dream, and we act surprised when we look at the Blue Screen of failure.

Why do you think that so many of the spiritual leaders of families happen to be women? Could it be they have figured out that not having an answer to every one of life’s situations doesn’t make them any less of a parent, spouse, individual or human being? Us men oftentimes feel we are showing weakness or some other degrading trait if we ask a question or admit we don’t have the answer? How many of you men have driven miles out of your way, simply because you refused to stop and ask someone else for directions?

There is an instruction manual called the Bible. Am I naive enough to think that everything you are or may deal with will be spelled out word for word inside the pages of this 2000 year old book? Absolutely not. However, just as every instruction manual has a number to Tech Support to help you clarify what the instruction manual is trying to say, we have been given the same option in our daily walk with God. When you have a question and you don’t understand exactly what God’s Word has to say about it, there are our brothers or sisters who are available to us to offer that ‘Tech Support’.

If you will admit it, fella’s, after you finally dug the instruction manual out of the trash and took the five minutes to read the directions, you had a clear understanding of what wire went into what jack and what it would take to make that new, incredible, TV work the way you saw it work in the store. And, if you’re like me, you stepped back and thought to yourself (never out loud), man, I am glad I looked at the directions.

So, if you have found yourself at a place in your life where that decision isn’t working out the way you want it too, or that choice hasn’t produced the desired effect in your family, it could be time to go digging for the instruction manual God gave you way back when, and spend some time looking over the directions He laid out. Yes, you may need to call Tech Support. But, trust me, they will understand and they have been waiting for you to pick up the phone and ask them to explain what it is that God is trying to tell you.

Men, trusting God does not show a sign of weakness. In fact, when you place your faith and Trust in God, it shows your family just how strong you really are. Go ahead, give it a try. You just might be surprised.

One Response to Where’s the Instruction Manual?

Good post. I find out something more tough on different websites everyday. It’s always stimulating to learn content off their writers and use a little something there. I’d prefer to apply with the written content on my weblog whether a person don’t mind. Natually I’ll provide you with a link on the web blog. Thank you for sharing.
